  1. These people kept a geneology scroll in a special room of the house. In the book Hagakure (true-ish tales about Samurai) there was a fire in a prominent lord’s home. It spread quickly and they all had to flee. While all were lamenting the loss of the scroll, outside as the buildings burned, a lowly cook ran back in and never came out. He had taken the scroll, dug down into the dirt and placed it there then layed on top of it. The scroll was saved and the lowly servant’s status was elevated to warrior class. His children climbed the ladder for his action.
